This Omeka project proposal examines the life of Mehitable Plaisted Goodwin, a central figure in the harrowing 1690 Salmon Falls Raid and a symbol of resilience in colonial Maine. The exhibit will utilize digital storytelling to trace her journey from the violent abduction of her family by French and Wabanaki forces to her five-year captivity in Canada. Key themes include the tragic loss of her infant son during the forced march north and her complex spiritual journey, which involved a Catholic baptism in Montreal followed by an eventual return to her Congregationalist roots. By contextualizing Goodwin's narrative within the broader geopolitical tensions of King William's War, the project highlights the precarious nature of life on the "Forgotten Frontier".

The life of Mehitable Plaisted Goodwin (1670–1740) serves as a quintessential case study in the volatile social and political landscape of the seventeenth-century New England frontier. Born into a prominent military family in York, Maine, Goodwin’s biography was defined by the cyclical violence of the Anglo-Wabanaki wars. Her father, Captain Roger Plaisted, and two of her brothers were killed in a 1675 ambush, an event that foreshadowed the precariousness of her own adult life. By 1690, she had settled with her husband, Thomas Goodwin, in the village of Salmon Falls, a frontier outpost that became a primary target for French and indigenous forces during King William’s War. This tumultuous background set the stage for the extraordinary trials and resilience that would come to define Goodwin's legacy.
